I received this for the Susan G Komen Foundation and thought that I would share this
with all the women that I know - its something to think about, and something that
we can all take action on.

Hi,

I'm Devon Webster and I'm a doctor who specializes in treating breast cancer. I'm also a breast cancer survivor.

In addition to the triumph of breast cancer survivors, I see the horror. I see the men and women whose cancer comes back, and I give them harsh drugs when it spreads to their lungs, liver, brains, and bones. I meet their families and friends who watch them get sick and sometimes die from this devastating disease.

Breast cancer isn't all pink and cheery; it's a complicated disease that needs to be solved. In Oregon alone, 10 people die every week from breast cancer. We need more research to find better treatments. We need to educate everyone and screen people who can't afford mammograms. Right now, these are the best way we know how to save lives.

We had an incredible turn out for the Race for the Cure in Portland on Sunday, September 21 this year. More than 45,000 people ran or walked (including me) but over 39,000 of us did not raise any money. Please stop and think about this fact: if everyone in the Portland Race raised only $100 dollars, we could fund screening mammograms for every uninsured woman in the state. And then add $1.12 MILLION dollars to national research dedicated to breast cancer.

It's important to understand that Race for the Cure is more than just a day in September. Oregon and SW Washington have the highest rates of breast cancer in the country, and the money we raise here goes to programs that can save their lives.

45,000 Race participants. $100 each. We can do this together and make a difference. Ask twenty people for $5. Or ask ten people for $10. Tell people why you're committing to the cause, share our goal, ask them to visit www.komenoregon.org to make a gift. It's easier than you think.

I'm tired of seeing vibrant women and men die from this disease. Please put a little extra effort in this year.
I'm looking forward to making history with you.

Warmly,
