Let's join a naturalist-led hike sponsored by East Bay Regional Parks. Here's their description: "These are naturalist-led programs for women who enjoy parklands, but whose concern for personal safety keeps them away. Today we?ll take a leisurely, four-mile hike up and down hill through grassland and briar patch to the Maricich and Sindicich Lagoons to see California newts frolic in their slimy splendor." I have called and reserved spots for five of us as I don't want to overwhelm them, so RSVP soon! If the event is full and you would like to be added if someone can't make it, please RSVP no and mention that you'd like to come; I'll add you if someone changes.

One of our group members (thanks Gail!) let me know of Step it Up Studios (http://www.stepitup studios.com/ and exercise studio in Pleasant Hill on the Martinez border. Assistant organizer Kyoko and I scouted out a class there a few weeks ago and thought we'd give it another shot. They are having an instructor try out Zumba at their studio this month, so let's give it a shot. As some of you know, we tried out Zumba at the 24 Hour Fitness and found it boring, but I've been told it varies from instructor to instructor, and this one seems very enthusiastic. Zumba can be described as: ""This workout combines high energy and motivating music with synchronized dance movements designed for any fitness level. The routines feature aerobic fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. Want to burn some calories and have fun? Then Zumba is for you!" (If you dig around on their website, you'll see that it isn't listed on the schedule. Don't worry--it's temporarily in place of the Afro-Brazillian dance class) It's free to try your first lesson here, so sign up and come along!

Ready to sweat and learn cool moves to impress your cat with afterwards (mine were actually bored when I shadow boxed with them, though...)? Come kick and punch @24 Hour Fitness! *Before you stop reading because you aren't a member, members can bring free guests this month, so don't worry! Enough 24 Hour members should show up to get you in!* I tried the class a few weeks ago, and I did sweat a lot, and the moves weren't that hard to follow (given, I lack general coordination though, so you'll probably be better off than me!). Their description of turbo kick boxing: "Pre-designed Kickboxing interval class using no equipment. Cardio section uses intensity drills and increased energy sprints followed by work recovery segments."

Okay, I essentially know very little about riding a bike except how to ride one and that I have two in my garage that need to be ridden, so let's go out and enjoy a little sun while on two wheels. That's it! Helmets and willingness to have fun are required!

Do you enjoy going in circles for hours on end? How about doing that on skates! On Sunday nights the Golden Skate has a a session of all you can skate (from 6:30 to 9), eat (pizza, although my husband proclaimed that it may be the worst pizza he's ever had, so if you have a problem with AYCE, it may be a deterrant), and drink (soda) for 2.5 $10. Not too shabby. Fun is included for free. You can rent old school quad skates for $4, inline skates for $5, or bring your own. Let's meetup a half hour before the skate session so we can socialize and get to know each other before skating. This is a family friendly event and will be cross organized with two other meetup.com groups--the East Bay Married Girls and the Fun and Fabulous Ladies Friendship Club.

Please come join us and walk, run, or do what you must around the track at Diablo Valley College. You can do this at your own pace and show up when you can. The track, which is a quarter mile loop, is off of Viking Drive (off Contra Costa Blvd near Sun Valley Mall) in Pleasant Hill and you can park at College Park High across the street so that you don't have to pay to park at DVC. I'll go over a few rules of the track once we get there to assure that they don't ask us to not come back! Feel free to call my mobile if you need directions!

Have you played the Nintendo Wii yet? It's fun, and it burns calories! Here's an article that shows a university study on weight loss, and I found on another website that "Wii Boxing burned an impressive 125 calories/half hour followed by Tennis at 92 calories/half hour and Bowling at 77 calories/half hour." Sounds good to me! Come over to my house and we can play Wii tennis and bowling (the boxing is HARD). I also have Dance Dance Revolution games, but I don't have any mats anymore (go figure!), so if anyone has them they could bring them if they want. Please bring a healthy snack (list in your response, please!) or a drink. Also please be advised that if you have allergies (I do too), I have dogs and cats. The dogs will probably go elsewhere for the evening with my husband, and the cats will most likely hide in a bedroom, but they do shed. I'll send out my address and home phone closer to the date to people RSVPed. Thanks!

Shell Ridge is a cool place for rock nerds like me (Elizabeth), but everyone else I've taken there enjoys it as well. The trails are relatively flat, but it can be a bit muddy. Depending on who shows up, we can take a hike up a significant hill to check out the views. Good dogs are allowed off leash at this park. Directions: From Walnut Creek, take Ygnacio Valley Road east to Homestead Ave. Turn right and then at the first stop sign, left onto Marshall Drive. Go to the end of Marshall Drive and park on the street in front of Indian Valley School.

I received another email on a free boot camp; last time I (Elizabeth) posted this type of event I hurt my leg the day before and was on crutches and the event on my end fell apart, but I certainly hope it isn't the case this time. The session is provided by Contra Costa Adeventure Boot Camp. I did a session last spring and lost 5 pounds over that month; it was also the fitness kick in the butt that I needed that six months later led me to hobble (see above injury!) through my first marathon, so I can attest that it is effective. This is just a sample class. From the same email I received, they describe it as: "The Saturday class is slightly different than our weekday boot camp classes in that we use no dumbells and do no mat core work (we do strength and core work using other tools). It does give you a great workout and will give you an idea of how our weekday classes are structured, what kinds of exercises we do and the superior, unique total body fitness you will develop from attending our boot camp classes." They are also having a free nutritional seminar afterward from 8:45 until 10:00am. I have no clue what it entails and if they are into pushing products to sell, so if you are interested there is also that, but we can also go to Cafe La Scala, which is a block away, for well earned post workout warm beverages. As always, I hope to see you there!

Let's hike, walk, run, whatever you want! Rain may cancel. It cost $1/hr in quarters to park; you may also park at the base of the Reservoir and walk up. We can carpool from downtown Lafayette if there is interest as the parking can be iffy. See you then!
