Hey everyone! I suspect some others of you have more weekday time than you like, so let's get together to enjoy some sun (it's in the forecast) and company. Rain cancels. Meet at 10 by Daphne's Greek Cafe for a walk, and we'll be back by 11:15 or so for lunch. Kids and well behaved critters welcome. Hope to see you there!

One of our members, Toni, has recommended this, and I heartily endorse, Light the Night, which is a fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The actual walk, which I believe is about 2 miles, starts at 7pm, but the event is listed from 5-8pm and there will be food, music, and fun beforehand. I believe you can participate without registering, but Toni has created a Team, Mandy's Mountain, in memory of her daughter, which you can join. You can find the details here: Mandy's Mountain

Let's try this again! If you've never climbed before, you should take the beginner class at 7:30pm. It cost $27 dollars and includes your safety equipment, the class, and climbing for the rest of the night. Here's the class description: "Enjoy an immediate climbing experience with our instructors as they guide you through the proper use of belay equipment, knot tying and basic top rope climbing. Personal responsibility and safe climbing practices are emphasized. Recommended for first-time climbers, minimum age 14. Please arrive 15 minutes before the schedule class start time." If you've climbed before and can demonstrate your safety skills to the employees or have a belaying card, it's $10 to climb and up to $6 for all the equipment. There's an area where we can practice tying knots and such to refresh our past class knowledge before we actually climb. Hope to see you then!

Hi ladies! I know this is quite a ways off, but I signed up last week for this half marathon as I need goals when working out, and this will work for me. Please consider the 5K, or maybe the half marathon if you want to work towards that. I can point you to online and local marathon training programs (or just me as well!) if you are interested. Anyway, here are the details from their website. (See Jane Run is a running store in Oakland for women): http://www.seejaneru n.com/t-See-Jane-Run -Half-Marathon-and-5 K.aspx See Jane Run Half Marathon, 5K and Kids Run Do you run for chocolate? Runners and walkers are welcome! Location: Crown Beach, Alameda CA Distance: 13.1 miles/5K/1 Mile Kids Run Date: Saturday, May 31, 2008 Time: 8:00 a.m. Runners and walkers are welcome! Take in the scenic beauty of Alameda?s Bay Trail and breathtaking views of San Francisco and the Bay Bridge. End the race at Crown Memorial Park, with a women focused race expo and free 1 mile kid's run. See Jane Run Sports is proud to partner with Girls Inc. as the event beneficiary. A portion of each registration goes directly to Girls Inc. of the Island city, which is a local member organization of a national nonprofit dedicated to inspiring all girls to "be strong, smart, and bold." In addition, runners, walkers, volunteers, their friends, and visitors to this site can also help Girls Inc. by making a donation to the organization and by setting up their own fundraising page through this site to reach out to their friends and colleagues to raise money for this worthy cause. All donors will be automatically eligible to win fabulous prizes!

Sorry I dropped the ball on putting this up, especially as I registered a few months back, but you've got to do this if you are able! If you don't know what Bay to Breakers http://www.ingbaytob reakers.com/main.htm l is, well, here's their description, and then let me amend it: "ING Bay to Breakers 12K was founded in 1912, making it one of the oldest footraces in the United States. Since then it has grown in size to become one of the largest running events in the world and is renowned for its truly unique and irreverent character. World-class athletes share this course with runners and walkers from all over the globe, and some of the most outrageous costumes you will find anywhere. 2008 will be the 97th running of this historic event." Don't let all that running mumbo jumbo scare you. 12K is 7.4 miles, but if you can walk it in say, 3-4 hours, you are good. It's basically like a big moving party, depending on your idea of a party. The event begins at the embarcadero downtown and ends on the Great Highway by the ocean and culminates with a festival in Golden Gate Park. (Please comment on this if you've done it before to encourage other--I'm drawing a blank this morning on description) Now the skinny: *It ain't cheap, but it's an experience, not a race. It's $48 to register, but you can tell your kids about it. I'll be happy to pick up your packet for you to save you the $10 they want to charge (that's pretty much robbery, btw), since I work in SF and was going to pick up mine anyway. *No one gets left behind by themselves! *Transportation wise, let's meet at the Pleasant Hill Bart Station at 6:30 AM (BART runs early just for this event). If you need to catch another train or time, no worries. Also, last year I found that their shuttle system was a bust (it's took nearly 2 hours of waiting in line and then waiting on the bus to get back). People seemed to have better success with walking north of the park and getting a cab, so I'd prefer to try that. *Bring family and friends! See you then!

Iron Horse....Contra Costa Canal....Ygnacio Canal ....pick your favorite trail or combination of tails, and let's do it. We'll meet at 7:00 PM at the parking lot on the left past the community center in the park. Call my cell if you are running late, can't make it, get lost, stuck in traffic due to a turtle parade crossing the road, or whatever else you may need at 925-864-1622. If anyone feels up to running or jogging and there's a big enough turn out to divide the group, I'm up to it.

Awesome newer group member Hope is the organizer of Tomorrow's Leaders playgroup in Oakley, and she's kindly offered to extend their weekly walks to our group. Here's the skinny: The meeting location is Rite Aid. It is not a very glamorous meeting spot, but it does the trick. Our walk is not very glamorous, either. We just take the sidewalks to the park (there is even one block with no sidewalks!) and back. There are much better places to walk, but I made it like this because I do not have a car on most weekends. =) Here are the details on our walk: Sundays at 10:AM, 2555 Main St, Oakley Meet in front of Rite Aid in Oakley and take a walk to Crockett Park where the kids (if you have any) can get out and burn some energy too. From Rite Aid to the park, and back, is about 3 miles. Remember your sun screen and bring your dog if you have one. We will wait 10 minutes for stragglers and leave by 10:10. Try to make it every week! If you are running late and want to meet us along the way or if you need directions, call Hope's cell phone 925-565-8388.

Sorry I had to cancel--my ankle is giving me issues right now, and I don't think samba is what it's looking for. -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- -------------------- ------- Hi all! Sorry for the late-ish notice and that it isn't in the immediate Diablo Valley area, but I'd like to try this samba class, and I hope you do too. This is Carnaval-style samba, not ballroom, so no partner is needed. Think drums, hip shaking, and fun. Over the last couple of weeks my friend and I have taken samba classes in the Mission (SF) after work, and this class is taught by another member of one of the dance groups that we have taken classes of, so I don't know exactly how this class will be taught, but I've heard good things about the instructor. Basically what I guess that you can expect is to shake your hips a lot and sweat a lot, but that's a good thing. Their description says: "Samba combines the energy of African dance the sensuality of Latin dance and the rhythms of both ....and anyone can learn to dance it" You can find the class info here: http://www.aquarela. com/SambaClass.html (Warning: if you open this at work and dig around on the site, some of the costumes the women wear on this page are, er, barely there, so be forewarned if you work with lots of men like I do!) Hope you can make it!
